WE Day Community: Nottingham

11/11/2019

On Tuesday 5th November 2019, eight Lammas students were invited to join thousands of others at the WE charity event at Nottingham's Royal Concert Hall. The event aimed to bring communities together and unite in celebration of their achievements over the past year in areas such as well-being, sustainability, equality and social action.
Students found the event immensely rewarding and listened to a wide range of thought-provoking speakers, including Martin Luther King III and Emilio Estevez.

Lammas staff members attending the event commented:

"It was a fantastic opportunity for us to be able to engage with the local community and learn how all of us are able to create a better world for everyone in it.  The event was positive and showed the children not what they were doing wrong, but what they were doing right and how to continue on that projection.  I was extremely honoured to listen to Martin Luther King III speak about how the battle for equality continues and how everybody has the ability to change the world for the better.  I was so impressed with our students, who were all impeccably behaved and listened attentively throughout.  They all found it meaningful to them and the event opened their eyes a little as to how people both in their communities and the wider world are still affected by inequality, health issues, confidence issues and prejudice."

Lammas students attending the event commented:

"I learnt the importance of looking after your mental health and feeling joy.  It inspired me to be more driven to find out more on the everyday struggles on our plant and how we can combat them"  - Mia, Year 8

"I learnt how important it is to look after our community.  It inspired me to make a change." - Lilla, Year 10

"I learnt that people judge people for who they think they might be, rather than for who they are.  This event inspired me to be a better person and be more inclusive." - Erin, Year 8

"I learnt that everyone has a voice so you can speak up for help.  If you have a disability or not you can always make your dreams come true" - Coby, Year 9

We look forward to engaging in further events with WE charity and our community in the future.
