Paralympians Visit our Holiday Club

Lucky participants of the Olympic-themed Holiday Club at Lammas School were able to meet two local Paralympians on the 16th of July, on the kick off day to the Holiday Club.   Oliver (Ollie) Hynd and Charlotte Henshaw  will both be swimming for Team GB this summer (pictured left with their coach Glenn Smith).  The staff and students were honoured to have them take time from their training to come and inspire our students.   Ollie was born in Sutton-in-Ashfield with muscular dystrophy and swims with his older brother Sam, who is also on the team. Ollie won gold at his first major international meet at the 2011 IPC European Championships in Berlin, Germany, setting a European record in the process.  Charlotte, from Mansfield, started swimming at age four and has set two European records.  She had both her legs amputated when she was 15 months old.     They both shared their stories and triumphs with the children, speaking of their daily routine, swimming thousands of meters every week, persevering even when they would rather not be in the pool.    Both athletes had photos taken with the students, with their medals.    Students then made sour dough athlete models and wrote about who they were and filmed them.  In the afternoon they made flags from felt to use to cheer people on during London 2012. Mr Rod Singleton, Headteacher at Lammas School said, “Having the Paralympians join us for our Holiday Club meant everything to our students. What inspiration they are for us all!”   The students will be cheering on Ollie and Charlotte during the Olympics on channel 4, on August the 25th 2012.   (Author: )
