Pirates of the C aribbean Holiday Club
"Ship ahoy, matey!" Our crew of pirates had a fabulous time at the first ever Lammas School Summer Holiday Club, themed on the Pirates of the Caribbean. "My daughter was so excited each night when she came home. She had such fun this week!" is the feedback we received.
Physics, literature, art, IT, nature, and sport were all woven into the week of fun with stories, games and projects all with the pirate theme.
The week long set of activities included making treasure chests, eye patches, swords and parrots as well as a magnificent pirate flag. There was a treasure hunt around the school and wanted posters for the dastardly pirates using computer technology. A bit of physics was underlying the building of boats, when our pirates were given all sorts of materials to choose from to build the fastest ocean going boat. Our “ocean” was a specially built channel which the boats raced down against the clock, powered by an electrical fan. The winners were Rebecca and Elise with their balloons acting to balance the boat on its speedy trip down to the finish line. Another day had everyone helping decorate pirate cakes and consuming pirate food.
One day, the crew followed the antics of pirate William Dampier, famed as a naturalist! “Instead of yearning for gold or loot, as most pirates were, Dampier was simply curious about the world he lived in; he wanted to see new places, animals and plants. Wherever he went, Dampier wrote notes about everything he observed, they took the form of part journal, part naturalistic observations.” Our pirates went to explore and "unknown land" (Brierley Forest Park) with special equipment to capture insects and plants. They returned back and studied their specimens under the microscope.
